China Sichuan trip

I’m home again, after one wonderful and magical week with my parents in China. It was an organized trip by a traveling company, and the destinations of this trip were the tourist attractions in the Sichuan province. The overall experience was thrilling, perspective-changing and fulfilling. Before this trip, I thought my interest in traveling had somewhat faded, but now I think I need to travel more, as I realized that there are still so many interesting places, cultures, and people out there in the world.

The highlight of this trip was jiu zhai gou (九寨沟) and huang long (黄龙). Jiu zhai gou is a nature reserve in northern Sichuan province, and it is situated on the Qing-Tibet plateau. For me, Jiu zhai gou was definitely the kind of place that gives me goosebumps because of its unparalleled beauty. Those 108 lakes were just like turquoise-colored diamonds of different sizes fixed in a rough sea of greenish mountains and valleys, conjuring up colorful reflections that were just as impressive as the vibrant nebulas in distant space (hahaha…I have tried my best, but human language it seems (or was it me?) is just incapable of conveying the pulchritudinous view that I have seen). In short, it was so sublime and awe-inspiring that I believe a person who appreciates the beauty of nature can be easily brought to tears (hell no, not me…but I have heard before that a samurai in Japan was so humbled by the beauty of spring that he committed suicide…absurd?).

Huang long (yellow dragon) is yet another heaven on earth. The colorful limestone pools and snow-capped peak of 雪宝顶 (5588m) are among the attractions in this protected area. The walk up from the entrance of the park (el. 3699m) to the end point (el. 4200+ m) was not an easy one; I’m one of the few in my group that managed to finish the trip in 3 hours (since the whole group is practically a bevy of retired people). I think so far it was the highest point that I have ever stood on earth.

Besides those two places that I have mentioned, I got the chance to visit wo long (卧龙), a sanctuary for the popular but rare animal – panda and le shan, where the much famed world largest le shan Buddha (乐山大佛) is situated.

Other attractions worth mentioning: Emei shan (峨眉山 - the famous mountain in wushu stories) and the famous Sichuan changing face show (四川变脸绝技). A china trip of course is incomplete without excursions to various temples and memorials.

The food was excellent, and my taste buds were numbed by treats of good food. Every meal had at least 12 dishes (except the most-of-the-time-lousy-buffet in hotels), and throughout the trip we had tried mushroom feast, barbecued meat by real Tibetans in their house, steamboat meal, and medicine meal (药膳).

An extra in this trip would be the scenery on road. Since we had to go to the Qing-Tibet plateau, the bus had to go through roads built on extremely mountainous terrain. The view was again breathtaking, sometimes even more majestic than the views in the tourist attractions.

The only not-so-nice things about this trip were of course, the restrooms (sighz) and the frequent visits to factories like pearl factories, jade factories and etc. Nevertheless, I had learnt some new things like ways to differentiate between a real and fake jade.

All in all, this trip has changed my view towards China. I used to wonder why my parents can pay visits after visits to this China without feeling bored, but now I understand the reason behind. China, is a lovely country, a country with lots of wonderful and magical places and a rich history waited to be explored.
